Code Black Wikia

Jesse Sallander is the senior nurse in charge of the residents at Angels Memorial Hospital.

History[]

New Residents[]

On the day the new residents started, Jesse introduced himself as their mama. He told them his job was to make sure they didn't come out thinking they could do no wrong. He also said they needed to ask him all the questions they thought were stupid because they would be too afraid to ask their daddy and his number one rule was that they were never allowed to kill a guest in his house. During his speech, a doorbell rang and they went to answer the alarm, which Jesse had set up so gangbangers leaving their wounded had a way to alert the staff that someone was there without being seen themselves.

They got the patient out of the day and onto a gurney. He'd been shot in the neck and was bleeding from his carotid. They took him inside and Leanne called for Jesse to get some blood. Then she realized he could exhaust their entire blood supply, leaving them with none for the other patients would would need it, so she replaced his blood with cold saline instead to buy him the time he needed to get to the OR.

When Leanne asked Jesse to find something for Malaya to do, Malaya questioned why Leanne was ignoring her. He said that she'd done her internship at Angels, so Leanne already knew what she could do and needed to see the new residents at work. He advised Malaya to relax.

Later, when Mario diagnosed spinal shock in a patient and declined to examine him further, leading Leanne to have Christa examine him and diagnose brain death, Jesse told Mario that asking if you wanted to examine your patient again was like being asked if you want a breath mint. The answer is always yes.

With the patient brain dead, the transplant team was called to retrieve his organs. He and Leanne took a quick break together before getting back to work. Jesse then found Malaya and got her to take over for Angus so he could help Rollie with a stroke patient.

As they went into Code Black, Jesse supervised Angus placing a chest tube in a child. Angus panicked when the tube got stuck, so Jesse told him he needed to pull it. Malaya was able to get Angus to calm down and pull the tube, allowing the child to breathe, and Jesse told her she did a good job. As the Code Black continued, Jesse helped treat several patients.[1]

Saturday Night[]

Jesse had the residents clean up the mess from the previous shift, saying that being an ER physician requires humility and like firefighters clean their rigs, they'll clean theirs. He then warned them that, as it was Saturday night, they would be seeing some things before the sun came up.

When Jake Willis came in after a car accident and lost consciousness, Jesse talked to Jake, telling him they had him.

Jesse later broke up a physical altercation between Mario and Brian Wellborn, who was in denial about having seizures. Leanne kicked Mario out of the ER and after the patient was stabilized, Jesse found Mario and said that he knew that Mario had to become a bullet to get out of the neighborhood he grew up in, but he couldn't be a bullet anymore because he had made it out.[2]

Kevin and Patrick O'Brien[]

When Kevin and Patrick O'Brien were in an accident, Jesse got their mother's number and gave it to Malaya to call her. Because Patrick had died, Malaya wondered what she should say. Jesse said she could only say that she needed to get to the ER, as it was agains hospital policy to give patient information on the phone. When Margaret arrived, she blamed Kevin for Patrick's death and Jesse had to pull her out of his room.

Knowing Leanne's history with drunk drivers and their suspicion that Kevin was drunk, Jesse talked to Leanne about it, though she was reluctant to take the time to talk while the ER was so busy. Hours later, when Margaret was still at the bedside of her dead son, Taylor said they needed the bed. Jesse told him to leave her be, but Leanne reminded him that Trauma One is for the living.[3]

Notes and Trivia[]

  • CBS Bio: Jesse is a nurturing and affable—but no-nonsense—presence in the Angels Memorial ER. He's the "Mama" to Leanne's "Daddy." As senior nurse, he oversees the new residents and takes his job very seriously. Jesse manages to keep an eye on everything unfolding in the ER and somehow knows where he's needed before he's even summoned. While Jesse can be humorous and playful, he doesn't sugar coat anything and he's not afraid to administer a hefty dose of reality, if necessary. Jesse is a terrific nurse who has seen it all—and he is always ready with the perfect piece of advice to prepare the residents for their next challenge. Jesse is also Leanne's best friend and the closest thing she has to family. Leanne would be the first to tell him that, at times, Jesse could really benefit from listening to his own great bits of advice.
  • Due to the high number of gang members being dropped off on the sidewalk outside the hospital, Jesse put up a doorbell for them to ring so the doctors would know they were there.[1]
