Malaya Pineda was a resident in the ER at Angels Memorial Hospital.
History[]
Starting Residency[]
Malaya started her residency at Angels Memorial Hospital, where she'd also done her internship. Since she'd already worked there, she was familiar with the staff, unlike the other residents. She was desperate to show off to Leanne Rorish until Jesse Sallander took her aside and said Leanne already knew what she could do and needed to get to know the other residents. He advised her to relax. Later, he had her take over casting Caesar Lopez's broken wrist so Angus could work on a stroke patient. Malaya noticed the patient was lethargic, but Angus said he was just sleeping it off.
Later, while she was helping Angus place a chest tube in a child with a pneumothorax, Caesar wandered into Center Stage in a daze and then collapsed. After Malaya helped Angus calm down and fix the chest tube, which had become stuck, they learned that Caesar had a brain bleed from a missed head injury, which forced Leanne to drill burr holes in the middle of the ER.
Malaya found Angus sitting alone in an empty OR gallery. He worries that he was already failing on his first day. He confided in her that he was originally going to do a psych residency, but switched to get some excitement and used his father's connection to the board to get a spot at Angels. Rollie found them in there and reassured them both after they expressed guilt over their patients nearly dying.[1]
Stan Rocksickler[]
Jesse had all the residents clean up the mess from the last shift. Jesse said that to be part of a team, no job was too big or too small, plus being an ER physician requires humility and like firefighters cleaned their rigs, the residents would clean theirs. He also warned them that as it was Saturday night, they would see some things before the sun came up. When Mario learned that Malaya had done medical school and her internship at Angels, he realized she'd been there at the time of Leanne's accident and asked her about it.
Later in the shift, Malaya and Angus treated Stan Rocksickler, who had been waiting for ten hours to be seen and was complaining of serious back pain. Malaya diagnosed persistent muscle spasm and decided to order a CT, while Angus thought it was Stan's heart. When Malaya presented her plan to Leanne, Angus stayed quiet.
While Stan was getting a CT, he started coding. Angus and Malaya checked on him and Malaya decided to start the CT as he was already there. The CT showed an aortic dissection, meaning Angus was right. They prepared to do a pericardiocentesis and when Leanne arrived, she inserted the needle, draining the blood and relieving the pressure. After she was finished, she said you never wanted to see an aortic dissection on a CT because it means you didn't act quickly enough. She warned them to trust their instincts.[2]
Kevin and Patrick O'Brien[]
When Kevin and Patrick O'Brien came into the ER after a car accident, Malaya helped treat Patrick. But, knowing it was futile, Leanne waited until Kevin was out of the room and had Malaya stop compressions. Jesse then had Malaya call their mom, but warned her not to tell the mother anything except that she needed to get to the hospital as it was agains hospital policy to give any information over the phone.
Margaret O'Brien arrived and the doctors were horrified to se her blame Kevin for Patrick's death, accusing him of being drunk while driving and disowning him. When the tox screen came back, it proved that Kevin was drunk as his mother suspected. When Kevin started to decline, they sent him up to the OR for an exploratory laparotomy over his objections that he wanted to die. In surgery, they repaired a laceration to his spleen. Malaya then told Leanne that Margaret was still in trauma one, sitting with Patrick's body, like she couldn't say goodbye. Leanne suggested that Patrick wasn't the one she couldn't say goodbye to.
When their shift finally ended, Malaya's girlfriend, Eva, picked her up.[3]

Notes and Trivia[]
- CBS Bio: Malaya is a doctor who needs proof. One of the new residents at Angels, she is a natural detective, synthesizing stats and uncovering hidden medical issues in play. Malaya's biggest challenge is acknowledging that the numbers don't always tell the whole story—and that you don't always have time to run the tests in the first place. Naturally cool, calm, and collected, Malaya is highly ambitious, but never at the expense of others. Malaya feels at home at Angels because she did both her training and internship there. Because of this, she has a special relationship with senior nurse Jesse, who is always there to comfort or coach. Malaya is not afraid to stand up for what she believes is right, which can sometimes get her into trouble. At times she also struggles with bringing emotional baggage into the ER.
- She attended Stanford University.
