History[]

Challenging Leanne[]

On the day the new class of residents started, Neal was horrified to watch Leanne Rorish replace a patient's blood with cold saline in the hopes of buying him enough time to have his carotid sewn closed. Neal reported this action to Mark Taylor, the E.R. Director, who said that the patient survived, so he wasn't concerned. Neal said that Leanne had been different since the accident and they all knew it. Mark still said that he supported her and liked her because the board liked her. She had more dropouts than before, but the doctors who survived her came out better for it. When Leanne found them, she confronted Neal and told him never to question her in front of her residents again.

Neal met some of the new residents while treating Ariel Braeden and her father. While cleaning her up, Neal encouraged Ariel, who had already lost her mom, to call her aunt, since her father was seriously injured. Ariel didn't want to do that because her aunt didn't handle Ariel's mom dying well. He left his cell phone with Ariel and told her to call her aunt anyway.

When Ariel's father was declared brain dead and Leanne told Neal that he was an organ donor, they realized they couldn't wait for family services to talk to Ariel, so they needed to do it themselves. Ariel struggled to understand what they meant when they explained that he was brain dead and she tried to refuse to let them take his organs. They had to tell her it wasn't her decision to make as her father had decided that for himself. When Ariel cried and hugged Leanne, Leanne pushed her off onto Neal.

When the transplant team came and took Ariel's father, Neal offered to step in for Leanne so she could talk to Ariel, who had asked for her, but Leanne refused, saying they were about to be in code black. Neal went to talk to Ariel and her aunt instead.

As they went into code black, Neal was treating Wayne, who had a broken leg cutting off blood flow. As he prepared to reduce the fracture, Christa called from an ambulance, where she had a patient unconscious due to carbon monoxide poisoning. The patient was pregnant and they were stuck in traffic, so Neal and Leanne talked her through doing a c-section over the phone. While she worked, Neal re-aligned Wayne's leg. Everyone was relieved when the baby started crying after being delivered. With Wayne stable, Neal told Leanne to take her patient to the OR that became available, as he needed it more urgently.[1]

Laura Halloran[]

Neal greeted Laura Halloran, who had been in a car accident, at the ambulance bay. She had cuts to her neck, including one to her maxillary artery, which Neal stitched. He ran labs, which showed a lactate of four, indicating organ death, so he defied Mark's orders to order a CT. The CT showed nothing, but when Laura woke up, she said she had abdominal pain before the accident and was on her way to the hospital when she crashed. Neal did an ultrasound and diagnosed an ovarian torsion. He called for an OB consult, but no one was available. He said she'd need to call her own OB, but she said she'd been driving down to San Francisco because that's where they froze her late husband's sperm befor he got sick and she was using it to try to conceive. She begged them to save her ovary as she'd previous lost the other to a teratoma.

Christa tried to get Neal to do the surgery himself, given his past as a surgical resident. He refused, saying he didn't have surgical privileges. After talking to Leanne about the cast, Neal finally agreed to do the surgery. After he'd finished and went to remove the sleeve, Laura started bleeding. Neal was able to stop the bleeding with a foley catheter, something Christa had recommended after seeing Leanne do it in the ER. The surgery was successful.[2]

Helping Christa[]

Neal helped treat Kevin O'Brien after he was in a car accident with his brother, Patrick. When it became clear Patrick was dead, Neal moved Kevin out of the ER so they could pronounce him.

Next, Neal helped treat Dylan Michael Ross, an inmate whom Neal recognized as having received a kidney transplant at the hospital. He told Christa, who was working with him, not to worry about what Dylan had done or look it up, as it was an ethical violation. They treated Dylan's kidney failure. When Christa tried to get off the case, Neal told her the way to be brave is to pretend you are.

Neal also helped Mario treat Zoe Fuller, who came to the ER with non-exertional heatstroke from drug use. When Zoe started bleeding from her eyes and nose, Neal and Mario gave her blood thinners for a clot in her lung, prioritizing breaking up the clot over the bleeding. Then they sent her to the ICU. Neal told Mario that he could be a good doctor, but he needed to stop keeping score.[3]

Notes and Trivia[]

  • CBS Bio: Neal is an attending ER doctor and highly skilled surgeon who likes to play by the rules. He is a former resident of Leanne's and, while he respects her deeply, he often disagrees with some of the risks she takes in the ER. That said, the two share a rich friendship and connection—and neither one can resist a medical adventure together. Neal is handsome, smart, and charming—the type of doctor mothers love to nab for their daughters. Neal's father is a renowned neurosurgeon who openly criticizes ER medicine as chaotic "manual labor," but Neal prides himself on carving his own way and becoming the doctor he wants to be. However, Neal can't deny his love of surgery, which he'd specialized in during his own residency. The prospect of pursuing it more full-time continues to tempt him.
