Rollie Guthrie is the longest-standing ER physician at Angels Memorial Hospital.
History[]
New Residents[]
On the day the new residents started, Rollie treated Mr. Cleery, who came in with stroke symptoms. Leanne sent Angus Leighton to work with Rollie on the case. Rollie explained to Mrs. Cleery that her husband had expressive aphasia. He explained that they wanted to use TPA, but had to get a scan first to make sure there was no bleeding in his brain. Once that was done, Rollie warned them there was only a 7% chance it would reverse his symptoms and a 7% chance it would cause catastrophic bleeding they might not be able to stop. If they didn't give it to him, he would stay the way he was or possibly get worse. They decided to give him the TPA and he was able to speak clearly.
Early the next morning, Rollie found Malaya and Angus in an empty OR gallery. He told them the history of the room and then reassured them when they worried about having nearly killed some patients.[1]
Ruth[]
Rollie treated Ruth, who had swallowed $3.80 in an attempt to get a field trip out of her nursing home. Rollie realizes the nursing home had brought her in on purpose, knowing they wouldn't be able to release her until she'd passed all the coins. Rollie gave her a mild laxative, wrote the total on a white board, and had the residents take turns searching her feces for the coins, subtracting from the total as they went. The next morning, Ruth had passed all the coins and Rollie called the nursing home to take her back.[2]
Stanley[]
When Stanley came in after falling off a truck ramp, Rollie sent him with Angus to get a blunt-trauma workup. He was horrified later to find Angus doing a thoracotomy on Stanley. Rollie reported it and explained what he'd seen to Taylor and Leanne. Angus later told Rollie that Mario had pushed him and pushed him to do it until he finally caved and shared a story of being unable to hit a bully even when the bully was restrained. Rollie told him he was the hero of that story and he needed to find his voice and let it sing.[3]
